For an instant focal point to your backyard, think about installing a pond. As an example in Ontario people that own Ajax real estate are able to contact Ontario Hydro for power and Enbridge for gas, but your area will have similar utilities. What better way to relax than sitting next to a pond and listening to water. Here are a few suggestions to help you build a perfect pond that will become the landmark of your garden.

Once you have chosen when your pond will sit, contact your municipality to find out if there are any electric or gas lines running in that area. Older trees will have significant root systems so try to stay clear from them. For everyone’s enjoyment, select a spot that can be viewed from most of the garden. On the other hand, you can tuck it away in a corner and profusely landscape the area so that it becomes a little refuge.

Outline the size and shape of your pond with a rope. Shapes are restricted when choosing a pre-formed pond. When using a liner you can let your imagination run wild. Be careful to dig the plant terrace the exact size as what is in your pre-formed liner or about one foot wide and eight inches down if using a liner. Now would be a good time to double check that the pond’s edges are balanced. Unless you have a power source near the pond, remember to dig a shallow canal to bury the PVC pipe that will hold the electric cord.

To prime the base of the pond, fill it with about one inch of sand. Also pour sand on the terraced shelves. If working with a pre-formed pond, lower it in the pit. If working with a liner, commence laying it down. To prevent any issues, cut the liner four feet wider and longer than the actual pond. Press the liner down and smooth out any folds.

You can now begin to fill the pond. As the water feature fills, backfill the extra space around your pre-formed pond and attempt to time it so that you are done at about the same moment the pond is filled. When using a liner, constantly pull the liner taunt all around. If you are using a pump to operate a fountain or waterfall, place it at the bottom of the pond and bury the cord.

Dressing up your pond should be great fun. Start by laying down flat rocks around your pond and offset a second layer for a natural look. Overhang the rocks a little over the water. Hide your water pump cord in between rocks and add a third rock on top taking care not to crush the hose.

Take your time when devising how you will plant around your water feature. Determine if you want your pond to be easily visible or should it harmonize with the rest of your garden? To make your pond accessible, ensure you keep at least once side clear. Creating a feature on one side and one end while maintaining the rest of the pond bare is a popular landscaping option. Also remember to select plants that will thrive in a  moist environment. In and around an Ajax homes in Ontario will frequently have differences in temperature with cold winters and hot, scorching summers so take your region’s climate into account.

Now is the moment to appreciate your hard work. Most water features can be installed in a single weekend. So go ahead. Add one to your backyard and be ready to receive lots of praise.
